Summer Buddhism Bits: Summer Activities

Hi! It's Lan, again. I did say this was going to be a weekly segment, but I turned out to be busier than I expected this summer. This will actually be a lot more spontaneous than I expected.

Some UBA members are in San Diego this summer so we have been doing some things together. We've been attending the Dharma Bums Temple almost weekly and the Deer Park Monastery on a couple of occasions. We even got to experience the Japanese Obon Festival at the Buddhist Temple of San Diego!

If you want to get in touch with us when we are having these trips, check out and join our Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/groups/187321217986082/ or email uba@ucsd.edu with the word "Summer" in the subject line.

On the Wednesdays of Week 0 and Week 1 in Fall Quarter, we'll be having a table out on Library Walk for Welcome Week. Feel free to stop by and check us out!

Our next meeting will be in the 2nd week of Fall quarter, so stay tuned!

Summer Buddhism Bits: Giving and Generosity

How has your summer been so far? This is Lan, the current president of UBA, blogging while we wait to do more activities in the upcoming academic year! Like most student organizations, we don't have plans in the summer besides getting ready for a new year. I'm starting "Buddhism Bits," weekly insights on Buddhism and my little take on it. Feel free to comment below if you have your own insights you'd like to share. Maybe I can get the other members to join in!

Giving and Generosity

I've been using the Bing search engine instead of Google because Bing gives me a reward point for every 2 searches I make. I can redeem those points for anything in their rewards shop. Right now, I'm working towards a one-month Hulu Plus subscription (but that's besides the point). I'm talking about Bing because it tells you to search certain words to get extra points. Today, that word is: generosity. I thought it would be a great topic for this post!

What does the Buddha say about generosity? I happened upon a special section in the Tricycle Magazine that actually lists some quotes from the Buddha on generosity. Generosity is very important in Buddhist practice. I've often heard that we must give without expecting anything in return, but you also shouldn't just give for the sake of giving either. The Buddha tells us that generosity is connected to the Eightfold Path and also to karma. Generosity is important to most all religions because we feel the spiritual connection. It's not about giving material things either. There are things we can give that is immaterial, i.e. knowledge, interest, advice, attention, etc. I think of UBA as a way for me to share the Dharma with UCSD.

Click here for some more generosity articles from the Tricycle Magazine. Click here for a link to an article about teaching generosity to kids. (I think I should sign up for this magazine now!)

Spring General Body Meeting #3 - Recap

Professor Edmond Chang came to visit us at our third general body meeting. He's a Eleanor Roosevelt College writing program (Making of the Modern World) professor and he talked about how he thought mindfulness and mindlessness went hand in hand. He told us a real-life experience he had with his son and how his mindless actions led him to be more mindful of the affects of his actions on his son. Professor Chang then led us in a group discussion on how our mindless and mindful actions. We hope to see him again soon!

We hope you'll join us at our last general body meeting on Thursday, May 24th at 8-9PM in the Thich Nhat Hanh Room!

Inter-Faith Meditation Flash Mob

Meditation is a great way to relieve stress, relax, reconnect with your spiritual side, get closer to nature and the Earth, etc. Whatever the reason, anyone can meditate and the best way to do it is together! We welcome all faiths, cultures, ages, and all walks of life to join us for this groundbreaking event inspired by the people at MedMob!

When the Geisel Library bell tower tolls at 1:00 pm, we invite you to meditate silently with us for 30 minutes. You can meditate in any way you want: sitting, standing, walking, etc. You can join us for all of it, part of it, or come just to hang out. Come with your own deepest intentions for yourself, your community, & our planet.

After 30 minutes, we will begin the 5-minute "Sound Bath." Meditators can use "Om," "Ong," "God," "Allah," Ma," "Yeah," or any other sound or mantra that resonates deeply within yourself.

We are coming together on the lawn next to Library Walk and the Price Center Fountain and between the Bookstore, Sun God Lounge, and Price Center Theater where the Zone does Tai Chi on Fridays. (I hope that is enough description.) If you're still confused about where this will be, check out this map zoomed into this very conspicuous patch of green.

Winter 2012 GBM #3 Re-Cap

On Wednesday, March 7, we had our last general body meeting of this quarter. We invited Dr. Art Rosengarten, a psychologist and researcher of meditation (also cabinet member Alex Rosengarten's dad), to teach us about meditation. We all sat down crossed-legged on the floor and Dr. Rosengarten let us practice some different methods of meditation. One of his favorite methods was to slowly breathe in while repeating the words "clear mind" in your head, and to slowly breathe out reciting the words "I don't know" in your head so that you can quickly relieve your thoughts.

Dr. Rosengarten shared with us the table below to quickly remind us about some of the Buddhist principles. Click on it to zoom in.

Here's a short re-cap of what we learned.

Mukojima-sensei is from the Buddhist Temple of San Diego. He practices a sect of Buddhism called Shin Buddhism or Jodo Shinshu. This sect was founded over 750 years ago in Japan.
