Special Event!

Orange Picking with Tzu Ching

Greetings UBA members. The Lord Buddha described the core principles of Buddhism as 1. do good, 2. avoid evil and 3 to train one's mind .

Join UBA on Sunday Nov. 23rd in doing some good with our first official-ish volunteer event with Buddhist based community service org Tzu Ching. We will be picking oranges for the food bank!

PS sidenote. UBA's 4th GBM will be on a Monday due to next Wednesday being the Wed. before thanksgiving. 

GBM 4 will be Monday Nov. 24th at 8pm in the Eleanor roosevelt College room in PC. Rev. Kenji Sensei from the Buddhist temple of San Diego will be our guest speaker.

Introductions--Learn about Buddhism and mindfulness, play some fun games, and try different kinds of meditation. No experience is necessary, and everyone is welcome to come learn.

Sangha Meetings

Student Sangha
Wednesdays | Week 3, 5, 7, 9 | 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Location TBD (One of the Biomedical Library Study Rooms) 

Sangha means “community” in Pali. Our Student Sangha is a community of UCSD students who get together to meditate, read Buddhist text, and discuss Buddhist practices in hopes of being able to inspire others to practice the way. The typical sangha session starts with 30 minutes of silent meditation, followed with book reading and discussion.

Temple Visits

Wat Metta Monastery
Sunday, October 12th, 2014 | Week 1 | 7:00am - 2:00pm
Meet 7am at Peterson Loop for Rides
The UBA will be making a trip to the Wat Metta Monastery to celebrate the Kathina festival, Buddhist festival which comes at the end of Vassa, the three-month rainy season retreat for Theravada Buddhists.

Dr. Karen Dobkins is a professor in the Department of Psychology and she's a fitness instructor for IntenSati - a workout that involves Intentional movement and mindfulness (Sati). In the face of our modern lifestyle, Dr. Dobkins would like to explore how Buddhism is approached by young people: whether they have had experience with it or had just heard about it here and there.

Vesak Celebration 2014 hosted by UCSD's UBA
and presented by the Southern California University Buddhist Associations

Location: UCSD Multi Purpose Room

Vesak is an annual celebration around the world honoring the historical Buddha's birth, enlightenment, and death.

Each year, a different member of Southern California University Buddhist Associations (SCUBA) hosts the celebration at their university for all to attend. Previous Vesak celebrations by SCUBA have been hosted by UCI and UCLA.

UCSD's UBA will host the Vesak celebration for its very first time! We hope you'll join us for this special event!

Student Sangha

Sangha means “community” in Pali. Our Student Sangha is a community of UCSD students who get together to meditate, read Buddhist text, and discuss Buddhist practices in hopes of being able to inspire others to practice the way.


Weekly Group Meditation

Wednesdays at 2:00 pm for 30 minutes
Location: The grassy spot atop the snake path (the snake's head)

We are simply part of the UBA community who are interested in meditation and enjoy the experience of meditation together in a group. Meetups are Wednesday afternoons if the weather is nice. The meditation style is up to you, there are no rules about this. The meetings are suitable for both beginners and seasoned meditators.

Special Film Screening With UBA

The Great Hall in International House (I-House)

UBA wants to invite everyone to join us to a special talk and film-screening.

A documentary filmmaker from Nepal will be speaking this evening on his film in the Great Hall (followed by a screening). The film is about preserving Nepal's Buddhist heritage in a remote sacred valley. This film touches on the struggles of a traditional Buddhist culture against the encroachment of modernity and industry.

Winter Quarter 2014 Events Week 1 - 8

General Body Meeting #1 - Special Guest Speaker from BTSD

Thursday, Jan. 16th | 8:00-9:00PM
Green Table Room in Sun God Lounge in Price Center West
For our first meeting of the quarter, Reverend Kenji Akahoshi, from the Buddhist Temple of San Diego, will give a talk on Jodo Shinshu (Shin or "Pure Land") sect of Buddhism, part of the Mahayana Buddhist tradition. Kenji-sensei emphasizes the practice of Buddhism in everyday lives, and will participate in a Q&A session. Have a burning question about Buddhism, or more specifically, Shin Buddhism? Come out and get them answered or just come out to learn!

Temple Visit - "Relevant Shin Buddhism" with Rev. Kenji Akahoshi

Rev. Kenji Akahoshi will be holding a workshop at 12PM on the basics of Shin Buddhism, and how we can use these practices to help guide our daily lives. (Click on the image for more information.)

Lunch will be at 11:30AM. It will be Subway sandwiches so bring $5 with you.
